Convenience, Technology Leading Small-Store Push at Walmart - Walmart stores will open more small stores than big stores in the U.S. this year. Bill Simon, Walmart's U.S. CEO, said that he saw the opportunity to open the 42,000-square-foot prototype Neighborhood Market grocery stores at a faster rate than the 180 to 200 planned this year. Food Lion Parent Delhaize Sells Three Grocery Chains for $246M - Delhaize Group (NYSE:DEG) has sold its Sweetbay, Harveys and Reid's operations to Bi-Lo Holdings for $246 million in cash. Reid's Stores to Close, Reopen as Bi-Los - Six Reid's grocery stores in South Carolina will close this week and reopen June 6 as Bi-Lo stores. Bi-Lo Holdings will "marry the best of the Reid's with the best of Bi-Lo" at six Reid's locations. The eight existing Bi-Los will adopt several popular Reid's products and programs. United Supermarkets to Operate Albertsons - Following Albertsons LLC's, recent acquisition of Lubbock-based United Supermarkets, Midland's three Albertsons grocery stores will soon be operated by United and rebranded as "Albertsons Markets." With the change, customers will likely notice a reduction in overall prices, said Eddie Owens, a spokesman for United Supermarkets. Midland Reporter-Telegram May 27, 2014
 
 
 
 
Piggly Wiggly Makes its Way to West Virginia - The grocery chain known for its meat departments and colorful pig-related attire has expanded its footprint into the Mountain State, opening three more stores. SpartanNash Plans Store Investments - SpartanNash said Thursday it plans to invest in the Nash Finch retail locations it acquired last year, particularly in booming North Dakota. In addition to the store remodels, Dennis Eidson, President and CEO, said the company also was looking at rolling out a loyalty program to the Nash Finch stores, and remerchandising some locations during the next six months.
