Avocado Category Growth Accelerates
Index Continues to Rise

52-Weeks Ending 3/23/2014

Total U.S. posted an index of 127 for the first time ever, recording record breaking sales growth in the Avocado category over the 3-year average. The Northeast posted an index of 145 this period, the highest index ever recorded for a Region. California posted the lowest index at 115, but still on the rise and above the 3-year average. All Regions outperformed their respective 3-year averages.

The 3-Year Rolling Index compares recent category growth to the long-term (3-year) growth trends for the Total U.S. and for each of the Regions. For example, an index of 120 means the current growth rate exceeds the long-term trend by 20%. An index of 80 means the current growth rate lags the long-term trend by 20%

All Regions Post Double-Digit Dollar Sales Growth
4-Weeks Ending 3/23/2014

All Regions posted double-digit dollar sales growth for the first time in over two years. Total U.S. posted dollar and unit gains of +20.2% and +5.5%, respectively.

The largest Regional percentage gain came from Midsouth at +31.4%. The Baltimore Market drove this performance, adding the largest absolute dollar gain of +$809,220.

Avocados Moving Up the Ranks

Total U.S. - Top Volume (LBS): Among 75 Million+ LBS Fruits

Avocados moved up to rank #3 on a growth rate basis and grew volume +8%, while Total Fruit volume was flat for the period. Pineapple topped the volume growth chart at +28%, followed by Pears, Tangerines and Apples.

Avocados Fight the Fast Five - Refuse to Slow Down
Total U.S. - Top Dollars ($): Among $120 Million+ Fruits

Avocados grew +19% and remain strong in second place on a growth rate basis. Pineapple came in at #1 at +24%. Tangerines, Berries and Melons round out the fast five. Avocados rank sixth in total dollars and continue to show strong growth. Growth of Avocados outpaced Total Fruit by +14 points.

SuperValu Part of 18-Store $65 Million Acquisition in Twin Cities - SuperValu Inc., along with four Twin Cities-based independent grocery retailers, announced they had each entered into definitive agreements to acquire 18 Rainbow Foods grocery stores. Weis Invests $101M in Growth Efforts - Weis Markets said today it will invest $101 million in the company's growth efforts in 2014. Jonathan Weis, president and CEO, said the company expects to complete work on 16 projects, including the expansion of its 1.1 million-square-foot distribution center in Milton, Pa. Wegmans to Expand to Richmond - Wegmans Food Markets said that it would expand to the Richmond, Va., market, with stores planned in suburban Short Pump and Midlothian. Richmond has seen upheaval in its grocery market in recent years, including the sale of the Ukrop's chain to Ahold, and new investment by Kroger and Food Lion. Supermarket News April 23, 2014
 
 
 
 
Aldi to Break Ground on 650,000-Square-Foot Distribution, HQ Facility - The Rosenberg store will be Illinois-based Aldi's 17th in the Houston area. All of Aldi's 30 Houston-area locations are expected to open over the course of two years, creating 400 jobs and representing more than $125 million in capital investment. United Will Supply Eight Texas Albertsons - United Supermarkets, Lubbock, Texas, said eight Albertsons in west Texas formerly supplied by a third-party distributor will be supplied by United's facility by mid-June. United is a wholly owned subsidiary of Albertsons. Supermarket News May 8, 2014
