Big Game generated the highest weekly retail sales in 2015
Thirteen holidays/events analyzed in a Hass Avocado Board (HAB) study exhibited strong growth in both dollars and volume. Big Game was the top avocado week of the year with dollar sales reaching 43 million. Big Game week also had the highest dollars and volume per store at 488 dollars and 528 units. Volume up and dollars down in the West amid price declines

West posted the largest volume gain at +4.7 million units. Despite large volume gains, dollars decreased -$302k amid a -16% decline in average selling price (ASP) to $0.78/unit. West posted the second lowest ASP behind South Central ($0.76/unit)

Denver was one of the largest avocado markets in the county and the largest market in the West. Denver volume grew +29% while dollars declined -7%. Denver ASP saw the largest decline in the county at -28%.

Avocado category growth index hit 120 or more in all regions for the first time since the inception of this report. Total U.S. indexed at 127 while Great Lakes index hit 136, leading the 3-year index ranking.

The 3-Year Rolling Index compares recent category growth to the long-term (3-year) growth trends for the Total U.S. and for each of the regions. For example, an index of 120 means the current growth rate exceeds the long-term trend by 20%. An index of 80 means the current growth rate lags the long-term trend by 20%.

Merging Ahold, Delhaize could sell 83 stores

As their proposed merger moves closer to completion, international retail conglomerates Ahold and Delhaize may have to sell off as many as 83 stores that could present an overlap issue for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), according to a published report citing an FTC list that has not yet been made public. Dollar General will open almost 2,000 new stores by 2017
Who says brick-and-mortar retail is dead? Dollar General DG 2.54% said at its annual investor day that it would open 900 new stores this year, and then another 1,000 in 2017. That would bring the discounter's already staggering store count to nearly 15,000 locations. Fortune, March 24, 2016.

The Fresh Market to be acquired by private equity firm

The Fresh Market has inked a deal under which New York-based equity firm Apollo Global Management LLC will acquire the specialty grocer for about $1.36 billion. The $28.50-per-share all-cash offer follows a review of strategic alternatives undertaken by The Fresh Market's board of directors. Progressive Grocer, March 14, 2016.
