Avocado prices skyrocketed +31% on average for Total U.S. in the current period. Regionally, avocado prices were up across the board while Northeast posted the largest price increase at +52%. The Northeast price increase offset a -26% volume decline in the region, resulting in double-digit dollar growth for the period. The Southeast region was the only region to grow dollars and volume, and added the most incremental dollars at +$3.9MM, amid an average price increase of +22%.

Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, the largest Southeast market, propelled the region into the spotlight, adding +$710K to the category. All markets in Southeast region posted double-digit dollar growth for the period.

Seven of eight regions significantly outpace their 3-year growth trends

While Southeast led the 3-year ranking at 132, seven of eight regions ranked at or above 120. California fell short of the 120 index, but still performed well at 118. The national index hit an average of 124 for the period.

The 3-Year The 3-Year Rolling Index compares recent category growth to the long-term (3-year) growth trends for the Total U.S. and for each of the regions. For example, an index of 120 means the current growth rate exceeds the long-term trend by 20%. An index of 80 means the current growth rate lags the long-term trend by 20%.

Amazon's first brick-and-mortar grocery store reshapes shopping experience
Amazon's first brick-and-mortar grocery store, Amazon Go, has launched in Seattle. The company said the 1,800-square-foot location offers the world’s most advanced shopping technology, allowing customers to walk into the store, grab whatever they want and walk out without waiting in line or paying at a register. Supervalu completes sale of Save-A-Lot
With the closing of the sale of its Save-A-Lot business to a Canadian company, Supervalu Inc. is looking forward to concentrating more closely on its core business as a grocery wholesaler. Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Supervalu finalized the sale of its successful hard-discount grocery store chain to an affiliate of Onex Corp., in Toronto, about a month ahead of schedule. Albertsons is in talks to buy Price Chopper
Supermarket chain Albertsons Companies is in advanced talks to acquire closely held grocery store operator Price Chopper for around $1 billion, said people familiar with the matter. The sources, who asked not to be identified because the matter is confidential, cautioned that it is still possible for the deal negotiations to fall through. Albertsons and Price Chopper declined to comment. Fortune, November 30, 2016.
