Retail avocado volume trends ranged from +20.6% in Pittsburgh to -32.3% in Phoenix/Tucson. Market volume trends showed a net positive in the Great Lakes region, which grew volume +2.3% vs. prior period.

The Southeast sales index topped all other regions this period at 140, and all regions indexed above 120, except California. The Total U.S. index hit 128 for the period.

The 3-Year Rolling Index compares recent category sales rates to the long-term (3-year) sales rates for the Total U.S. and for each of the regions. For example, an index of 120 means the current sales rate exceeds the long-term rate by 20%. An index of 80 means the current sales rate lags the long-term rate by 20%.

Supermarkets’ biggest stores are bigger than ever, but at the same time, grocery chains across the country are testing small-format stores that tuck into fast-growing urban areas, often as part of larger mixed-use office and residential projects. Kroger, the operator of Baker’s supermarkets in Omaha, is testing different small formats in its home state of Ohio.

Walmart is doubling down on grocery in its race against Amazon
Company executives told investors that grocery is key to hooking shoppers who may then go on to purchase the cosmetics, clothing and various other products that fill Walmart's shelves. Even as it makes the most of its brick and mortar footprint, Walmart is seeing significant success online, saying that it predicts it will see a roughly 40% increase in e-commerce sales in the U.S. next fiscal year.

AmazonFresh offers pickup, delivery for eMeals
Meal-plan-building service eMeals has added AmazonFresh to its list of grocery delivery and pickup service partners. The service – which previously was available only via delivery through Instacart or pickup through Kroger ClickList and Walmart Grocery – now allows shoppers to send a shopping list, which is automatically generated for all meals selected each week, to AmazonFresh with a single click.
