Seven of eight regions post double-digit dollar growth
4-Weeks Ending 12/25/2016
Nearly all regions posted double-digit dollar growth, except for California, which grew +8.5%. The Southeast had the greatest increase at +26.6%, while West added the most incremental dollars at +$3.8M. Total U.S. grew +18.8% for the period. Volume saw similar trends with all regions but California posting positive volume growth. Southeast was the fasting growing region in volume (+33%) and added the most incremental units at +3.8M units.
 
Miami/Ft. Lauderdale is the largest market in the Southeast and posted the highest incremental dollars and volume in the region at +$870K and +924K units.

Albertsons calls off Price Chopper pursuit, sources say
Albertsons has dropped its pursuit of Golub Corp., parent of New York’s Price Chopper chain, sources told SN this week. Albertsons was identified as being in “advanced talks” on a potential $1 billion deal to buy Golub late last year, Reuters reported. Supermarket News, Jan 25, 2017.

Save-A-Lot abandons west coast
In its first major move since being divested from former owner Supervalu Inc., hard-discount grocery chain Save-A-Lot is exiting the California and Nevada markets. The decision, which will impact 13 corporate locations, a retailer-owned store and its Rancho Distribution Center, came “after rigorous review and analysis,” said Chon Tomlin, spokesperson for Earth City, Mo.-based Save-A-Lot. Instacart makes way into St. Louis
San Francisco-based grocery delivery service Instacart announced its entry into the St. Louis market through the partnership with several local food retailers. Beginning Feb. 16, several food retailers, including Schnucks, Straub's, Shop 'n Save, Whole Foods Market and Costco, will offer online ordering and delivery. Progressive Grocer, Jan 30, 2017.
