Seventy-three percent of all avocado purchases occur in the Grocery channel
Grocery is the largest venue for avocado retailing and holds a 73% share of avocado purchases. However, in 2016, declining spend per trip in Grocery led to an overall drop in avocado purchases in the channel. Avocado dollars up double-digits across the nation amid steep price increases
4-Weeks Ending 4/16/2017
All eight regions posted double-digit dollar growth this period, with Northeast leading at +31%. The Northeast also had the most incremental dollars at +$6.6M, contributing 20% of Total U.S. incremental dollars (+$32.5M). Conversely, all regions but Midsouth and South Central posted volume declines for the period. South Central led in volume (+3%), while Southeast posted the steepest decline at -14%. All regions exhibited steep increases in average price.
New York is the largest market in the Northeast and posted the highest incremental dollars in the region at +$2.0M. New York also had one of the highest price increases, up +44% to $1.77/unit for the period.

Dollar General testing fresh produce
At some of its recently renovated stores, Dollar General Corp. has been carrying fresh produce as part of the retailer’s wider strategy of expanding its perishable offering, the company revealed during a quarterly earnings call last week. For the company’s first quarter of fiscal 2017 ended May 5, it reported a net sales increase of 6.5 percent to $5.61 billion, compared with $5.27 billion in year-ago period, while same-store sales...

Lidl gears up for first 9 store openings in June
Lidl US on Tuesday said that its first nine stores would open Thursday June 15 at 8 am. The locations are the first of 20 the German retailer earlier this month said would be opening this summer. Lidl, a division of Schwarz Group with U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Va., is expected to open at least 100 stores along the East Coast by next summer, bringing new pressure to established U.S. grocers.

Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage opens new Denver store
At the time of its initial public offering, in 2012, Natural Grocers had 55 stores in 11 states. Today, they’re up to 137 stores in 19 states. In fiscal 2016, the chain opened 23 stores. By the end of this fiscal year in September, the chain plans to have opened 14 to 16 stores. In the future, they’ll probably average about 12 a year, or roughly one a month.
